I LOVE WEEN, MANG!

What is Ween?

Ween is a band made up of Dean Ween (Mickey Melchiondo) and Gene Ween (Aaron Freeman).

Dean and Gene formed the band in 1984 when both of them met in a junior high typing class. Gene would perform vocals and sometimes rythem guitar, Dean would play lead guitar, and they would use a DAT machine for pre-recorded backtracks. Their first studio album, God Ween Satan: The Oneness was released in 1990. In 1991, Ween released The Pod and then in 1992, they released Pure Guava. The song Push th'Little Daisies off of Pure Guava became a hit due to its appearence on MTV. Ween toured the US after the release of Pure Guava, the show the did in Chapel Hill in 1992 would be released as At the Cats Cradle, 1992 (Live)

After Pure Guava, Weens production quality improved. Claude Coleman became their drummer while their producer Andrew Weiss played bass.Chocolate and Cheese was released in 1994 and the songs Freedom of 76' and I Cant Put My Finger On It were both made into music videos. In 1995, 12 Golden Country Greats, Weens country album was released. Despite the name, the album only has 10 songs.

Ween released The Mollusk in 1997. If I'd have to guess, I'd say this is their most popular album due to the song Ocean Man and its appearence in the Spongebob SquarePants movie. The Mollusk is actually cited as one of Spongebobs biggest inpirations from the creator, Stephen Hillenburg. Ween also began to work with Trey Parker and Matt Stone at this time, with the song The Rainbow on the episode "Chef Aid" of South Park

White Pepper released in 2000. The song Even If You Dont was made into a music video that was directed by Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

In 2002, Claude Coleman got into a huge car accident. Ween organized some benefit shows in New york. At this same time, they'd been working on the Ceasar demos which later became there 2003 album Quebec. This same year they did All Requests Live where fans would vote which songs they'd like to hear the band play.

They made another live album and dvd in 2004 called Live in Chicago.

In 2005, Shinola Vol.1 is released. This album is a bunch of re-recored unreleased tracks, including I Fell In Love Today from the previously mentioned Ceasar demos.

Weens last studio album was released in 2007, La Cucaracha

In 2012, Ween broke up for 3 years but reunited in 2015. Since 2024, the band has been on an indefinate hiatus. They seem to be focusing on re-releasing some albums, like Europe "90" for Record Store Day 2026 and some vinyl re-releases of White Pepper and Quebec
